ABOUT SEKHEM AND SEKHEM SCHOOL ~
Ours is a time of change. We know that we must either change or be left in confusion, but meaningful positive change is not a simple matter of ideas and behaviors. It is a way of living in connection with the divine and with the flow of energies that link every breath and mind. Growth and change are built on a recognition that we, too, are locations of spirit, that we participate in the development and healing of the universe, and that we make our contribution more fully as we are more aware of ourselves and more disciplined and more connected to God. Therefore, we at Sekhem School are dedicated to the development of ourselves and others as strong, capable containers spirit, and as intelligent participants in the pulse of the living universe. Each of us—both we and you—has a contribution to make. It may seem, sometimes, that self-awareness and dedication to one’s own developmental life are selfish or inconsequential in view of the great needs we see around us. They can be, without commitment to putting oneself to use, filling one’s place, serving one’s call. Sekhem School is about assisting you in discovering your call and your place, and training yourself to be of use and of service to humanity and to God. Why can’t I do all this by myself? Well, of course you can. Change is constant. It has been going on since the beginning of time, and we all participate in it. Growth and healing, however, are more specific tasks and objectives. Fulfilling your call, making your contribution, being of use are all special, focused, urgent tasks and goals. People have recognised the value of guidance and direction from an experienced other since, seemingly, the beginning of human communities. Religions, corporations, arts, technology have all incorporated a system of coaching and mentorship for timely development of new, skilled, mature members. Contemporary communities, perhaps seeing the limitations of a competitive, everyone-for-him-or-herself model, are returning to the model of walking-with, modeling, and guidance. These forms of accompaniment are especially strong in indigenous traditions, monastic traditions and most especially in Catholicism. This is also the model of Sekhem School. What is this word "Sekhem"? Sekhem is an Ancient Egyptian term meaning “power”. It is the root of the name of Sekhmet, ancient Egyptian Goddess, the Powerful One, aggressive in maintaining right order and in healing. We might describe Sekhem in one of these ways:
